At our nursery, the garden is more than just a place to play – it's a vital part of each child's development. Spending time outdoors brings a wealth of benefits that support children's growth in every way.
Here we talk about just some of the benefits outdoor play:
Fresh air can benefit mental health
Fresh air and outdoor play improve both physical and mental health. Being outside can boost the immune system, help children sleep better, and reduce stress and anxiety. Exposure to nature has also been shown to enhance cognitive development, helping children think more clearly, concentrate for longer, and stay curious about the world around them.
Outdoor play can aid physical development
Our nursery garden offers a rich environment for gross motor development too. Climbing frames, balance beams, and natural obstacles help children build strength, coordination, and balance. As they navigate equipment and open spaces, they also develop spatial awareness and problem-solving skills – all while having fun.
Building peer to peer relationships
Outdoor play is also a great way to build friendships. Whether working together to build a den, taking turns on the swing, or inventing imaginative games, children learn cooperation, empathy, and communication. These early social experiences lay the foundations for strong, lasting friendships and growing confidence.
In short, our nursery garden is a place where children thrive – learning through movement, laughter, fresh air, and the joy of being together. Here at Hassocks Day Nursery we spend time in our garden throughout the day, often enjoying snacks and our peripatetic classes outside in the warmer months.
