Why Risky Play is So Important for Young Children

As parents, it's perfectly natural to feel a little nervous when you see your child climbing, balancing or exploring somewhere new. Keeping children safe is always a priority, but it's equally important to give them opportunities to challenge themselves and develop confidence.

At Hassocks Day Nursery and Preschool we encourage all our children, from our little Ladybirds to our bigger Grasshoppers, to explore, investigate and take part in carefully managed adventurous play. Through these experiences, children develop essential physical, social and emotional skills while learning how to assess risks in a safe and supportive environment.

What is risky play?

Despite its name, risky play isn't about encouraging unsafe behaviour. Instead, it's about giving children opportunities to experience age-appropriate challenges that help them learn about their own abilities.

Examples of risky play include:

  • Climbing over logs, climbing frames and natural obstacles.

  • Balancing on beams, stepping stones or uneven surfaces.

  • Jumping from small heights.

  • Running, chasing and energetic outdoor games.

  • Exploring nature and different outdoor environments.

  • Learning to ride balance bikes or scooters.

These activities encourage children to think independently, solve problems and build confidence, all while being supported by experienced early years practitioners.

Supporting children's confidence and independence

Children develop confidence by trying new things for themselves. Whether it's climbing one more step, balancing for a few extra seconds or deciding the safest route across an obstacle, every small achievement gives children a sense of pride.

They begin to understand that challenges can be overcome with practice, determination and perseverance.

These experiences help children become more independent and willing to have a go, both in nursery and as they prepare for school.

Developing strong bodies through active play

Physical play is one of the most important ways young children develop. Climbing, balancing, crawling, jumping and running all help to strengthen muscles, improve coordination and develop gross motor skills. These activities also improve children's balance, body awareness and spatial understanding, helping them become more confident in their movements.

Regular outdoor play gives children the freedom to move in different ways while enjoying the many benefits of fresh air and nature.

Building problem-solving skills

Every adventure presents children with opportunities to think.

  • Should I climb this way?

  • Where should I put my foot?

  • Can I reach that branch safely?

By working through these decisions themselves, children develop critical thinking skills, resilience and confidence in their own judgement. These problem-solving abilities become valuable throughout their education and everyday life.

Learning how to manage risk safely

One of the greatest benefits of risky play is that children learn to recognise and manage risk for themselves.

Rather than simply being told what they can't do, children begin to understand their own capabilities and limitations. They learn when they feel confident, when they need to slow down and when it's sensible to ask for help.

These early experiences help children make safer choices as they grow older and become more independent.

Developing friendships through adventurous play

Outdoor adventures often become shared experiences. Children encourage one another, take turns, solve challenges together and celebrate each other's successes.

Through collaborative play they develop important communication skills, empathy, teamwork and respect for others. Many of the strongest friendships are built through shared play experiences.

How we support safe risky play at Hassocks Day Nursery

Creating exciting learning opportunities doesn't mean compromising on safety.

Our experienced team carefully plans activities that are appropriate for each child's age and stage of development. We complete regular risk assessments, supervise children closely and provide encouragement that helps them challenge themselves safely.

Our approach includes:

  • Carefully planned indoor and outdoor learning environments.

  • Age-appropriate equipment and resources.

  • Ongoing supervision and gentle guidance.

  • Teaching children how to recognise and manage risks.

  • Encouraging independence while providing reassurance when needed.

By balancing adventure with careful supervision, children can explore confidently while remaining safe.

Helping children prepare for school—and for life

The skills children develop through adventurous play extend far beyond the playground.

As they learn to solve problems, persevere through challenges and believe in their own abilities, they are building the resilience, independence and confidence that will support them throughout their school journey and beyond.

At Hassocks Day Nursery, we believe childhood should be filled with opportunities to explore, discover and grow. Through carefully managed risky play, children develop not only stronger bodies, but also curious minds, greater confidence and a lifelong love of learning.

Sometimes, the greatest achievements begin with one brave first step.
